Other VP contenders at the weekend meeting included Stefanik, Scott and North Dakota Gov. This may help to explain why some influential Trump donors are especially wary of Ohio Republican Sen. J.D. Rubio, Stefanik, Scott and Burgum have all privately been pitched to Trump as top prospects with close ties to top business leaders. Those ties could bolster Trump's fundraising operation if one of them is chosen as his running mate, according to people familiar with the matter. Burgum could even help to self-fund Trump's campaign, just as he did for his own Republican primary run for president.

But also a true thing: In 1994, when Simpson fled police in his white Bronco, 95 million people watched the slow-motion chase on TV, in real time. In 1994, AOL, the service that popularized the "World Wide Web," had a little more than a million subscribers. AdvertisementAnd the notion that we're never getting a TV event like the Simpson affair is not a new one, either. Digital media can certainly focus a lot of people's attention on one thing, but it can't compel everyone to watch one thing. Now I'm going to go stream June 17th, 1994 — ESPN's documentary about the Simpson chase.

Media magnate Rupert Murdoch, who turns 93 next week, has been married four times — and is engaged again, his representative said Saturday. He plans to marry Elena Zhukova, 67, a Russian-born retired scientist he met last year. Their daughter Dasha was previously married to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, who used to own the Premier League football club Chelsea. Murdoch has been married four times and shares six children with three of his wives. Paramount is in trouble: The one-time media giant's ad sales are plummeting, and so is its stock price. This week, the day after the company broadcast the Super Bowl to a record-setting number of viewers, it announced companywide layoffs. AdvertisementBut why should you, a person who doesn't work at Paramount, care about the future of the company? But even under the best-case scenario, it would be hard for Paramount or any other traditional media company to survive the transition to streaming and digital. Which is why two of the biggest traditional giants — Time Warner and Rupert Murdoch's Fox — took the opportunity to sell most of themselves in 2016 and 2017.

Rupert Murdoch's The Wall Street Journal made widespread cuts to its DC bureau on Thursday in a restructuring that several insiders called a "bloodbath." They were also, however, expected, since staffers had been told a restructuring was coming in preparation for the installation of the Journal's new Washington coverage chief Damian Paletta, who starts February 5. The new Washington bureau will focus on politics, policy, defense, law, intelligence and national security. The expanded Finance & Economics coverage area will unify our reporting on the macroeconomy, global economic trends, monetary policy, credit and banking, and financial markets. Brent Kendall, the law bureau chief, will take on the expanded role of Justice, Judiciary and Law Editor.

Jeff Smith, CEO and chief investment officer of Starboard Value, L.P., speaks at a panel discussion at the SALT conference in Las Vegas May 14, 2014. Smith's remarks at the 13D Monitor Active Passive Investor Summit came after Reuters revealed last week that Starboard had become a News Corp shareholder, a prelude to a potential shake-up at Murdoch's media empire. "We believe separate news and real estate assets could help unlock $7 billion or more in value," he added. Starboard, which has pushed for changes at companies ranging from Salesforce (CRM.N) to Darden Restaurants <DRI.N,> would struggle to shake up News Corp without Murdoch's consent. If News Corp separates its real estate assets, shareholders would benefit, Smith said.

Emma Tucker's Wall Street Journal laid off staff in its Hong Kong bureau, and three company insiders said they were bracing for more cuts in the newsroom. The Hong Kong layoffs affected seven editors on a desk that puts finishing touches on stories before they're published, two sources said. People with direct knowledge said they believed the company was looking to save money by shifting the work to other offices. The Hong Kong cuts came shortly after Tucker revealed in September her plan to revive the newsroom with an "audience-first" model, which has fueled speculation that a reorg could be on the way. Hong Kong is the latest example of cuts to the storied newsroom that have dribbled out over the past few months, in keeping with the Journal's practice of trimming small numbers of people.

Brian Cox spoke with the BBC about his thoughts on Rupert Murdoch stepping back from chair of News Corp.Cox recounted how Murdoch's son-in-law once asked if the "Succession" writers could "be a bit nicer." Cox, who played a character inspired by Murdoch, criticized the tycoon's ability to "manipulate" politics. Murdoch announced last Thursday he was stepping down from running Fox and News Corp, and handing the reins to his eldest son, Lachlan Murdoch. "I think he's been watching too much 'Succession,' clearly," Cox joked of Murdoch's decision, in the BBC interview. "He's probably the most tenacious human on God's earth," Cox said of Murdoch.

For Lachlan Murdoch, this moment has been a long time coming. On Thursday, his father Rupert Murdoch announced that in November he'll step down as the head of his two media companies: News Corp. and Fox Corp. Lachlan will become the chair of News Corp. while remaining chief executive and chair at Fox Corp., the parent of Fox News Channel. In Murdoch World, as in the fictional world of the Roy family, seemingly sure things can go sideways in an instant, particularly when unexpected opportunities arise. Even at a time when media consumption is splintering from traditional routes, particularly among younger people, Murdoch's influence is embedded in the country's information ecosystem because of its massive reach, media experts said. His local properties include Sky News Australia, a cable TV channel fashioned on the partisan style of U.S. network Fox News. "The Murdoch papers still have that key reach with working-class demographics that can still be influential," he said. "He has been in lots of ways a controversial figure, but an influential figure too, and this is an end of an era at News." Murdoch's exit cuts a native tie between News Corp and Fox Corp and Australia, where Murdoch was born.
